This beloved culinary gem is a popular street food in Poland, often enjoyed as a quick and satisfying meal or snack. A zapiekanka is a open-faced sandwich made with a halved baguette or bread roll, topped with a flavorful combination of ingredients and melted cheese, then baked until golden and bubbling.

Cooking Time: 15min

Serving: 1 serving

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 baguette or long bread roll
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced ham
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup grated cheese (such as mozzarella, cheddar, or Gouda)
  • Ketchup or tomato sauce, to taste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) or air fryer.

  2. Slice the baguette or bread roll in half lengthwise, creating two long pieces.

  3. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms, onion, and ham. Cook until the mushrooms and onions are softened and lightly browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Spread ketchup or tomato sauce over the cut side of each bread half.

  5. Layer the cooked mushrooms and onions over the sauce.

  6. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top.

  7. If desired, add any additional toppings, such as cooked bacon, sausage, bell peppers, tomatoes, or pickles.

  8. Place the prepared zapiekanka on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  9. Once cooked, remove the zapiekanka from the oven and let it cool slightly.

  10. Slice the zapiekanka into individual servings and serve warm.
